im dissapointed. last years was so good.

    this looks………………. shocking.

  • colinmackinnon

Yeah, and I’m disappointed by your bad spelling and grammar.

    Shocking.

  • kevin

i would have just liked a bit more variety is all.

its meant to be a showcase of talent. not put on your mates band day. would have liked to see the treat up there mainly and scarlettes.

bored just reading the line up

“its meant to be a showcase of talent. not put on your mates band day”.

I’m certain the booking poilicy was even-handed…not least because Ronut hasn’t got any mates!

But I’m amazed, Kevin, that you have already seen all the acts listed enough times to judge whether they’re any good or not – you must go to a lot of gigs.

  • Fizzywig

It’s quite guitar-orientated but a pretty decent line-up from the ones I’ve actually heard. Maybe not quite as eclectic as last year. Interested though Kevin to know which of those bands you think are just Ronan’s mates?

(just listening to From Here We Run while i type this – cool stuff not heard of them before)

  • William

I’m just pleased I get to see We Aoreonauts again. One of my favourite oxford acts. Look forward to seeing some bands Ive never heard before as well.

  • http://www.knickerpicker.com/ Mr. F. Headstrong

If I understand this correctly, the Original Rabbit Foot Spasm band are all the children of Mr. Ronan Monroe, the proprietor of Nightshift are they not?

It is an absolute BLOODY DISGRACE that this sort of conflict of interest is allowed to occur virtually unchallenged year after year in what is essentially OUR music scene!!!!

    I am very ANGRY now!!!!!!

This TYRANT, Monroe character has some nerve, producing offspring in his ‘workshop’ on the outskirts of Kidlington just so he can fill what should be a diverse and inclusive event, with bands with silly names that can’t play their instruments properly. I can only imagine that he is intending to wreak havoc by unleashing a dirge of apocalyptic psychedelic guitar noise under cover of smoke machines (which interfere with my asthma and should be banned incidently) followed by ‘fun’ Jazz rock music on the unsuspecting, decent citizens of our beloved country.

It’s bad enough that at least one one of the bands playing only has 2 people in it, I feel shortchanged, still, they manage to make enough of a racket with just 2 of them, heaven knows what a 5 or 6 piece rock band will do to the newly resurfaced Cornmarket or indeed any of the historic buildings around.

This must STOP now!!! Otherwise – mark my words, if it doesn’t, we’re all in big trouble!!

  • Beaver Fuel

    Hello Joe!

  • http://www.spiral25.com/ Joe

It’s not me! It’s someone pretending to be me pretending to be someone else. Stop looking at this and get on with your work immediately!

  • http://www.gappytooth.com gappy

“It’s not me! It’s someone pretending to be me pretending to be someone else”

The 21st Century’s broken again, can anybody help?

  • Beaver Fuel

“The 21st Century’s broken again, can anybody help?”

Not me as I’m stuck in the past apparently, so much so I still think GMTV is on the telly. No wonder Mum’s gone to Bejams.

  • TheWrongWay

    Im saying nothing!

have just discovered We Aeronauts so seeing them live will be good…same for Phantom Theory.

  • http://www.policedogs.org.uk/ ryan giggs

haha mvoe over grandad, mak ewye for da musical yewt haha…!!!!!!!

  • kevin

haha. Im glad somebody agrees with me.

After reading what people had to say about both my comments I had a listen to the bands I hadnt heard before. Was only a couple. But I still stand by my comment that the lineup is pityful. We Aeronouts is the best on it and still that will put me to sleep! Is this the best Oxford has to offer? no. Ive lost all faith in nightshift. If this is what the organiser and nightshift are into I wont even bother picking up the next issue.

    Also
Spiral 25 is perhaps the most boring band I think I have ever listened to in my life. But not only did they get the gig, they are way up there!!!!! Anything to do with the fact they chat alot on the forums?? Hence mates…. and which brought me to comment here. Beaver fuel too, etc. Can somebody honestly say that this is good music and what Oxford wants to hear at a showcase?

I picked up the guitar today for the first time in a good 10 years. I got out a hammer and started smacking the fretboard. At the rate im learning ill be on the cover of nightshift next month, and headlining the punt in 2010. I think its time this Ronan guy pulled the cock out his crack

  • Fizzywig

Go on then kevin tell us who you would have on at the Punt if you were organising it? I promise not to laugh!

  • Andy

some really good bands on the line-up as always :)

    Phantom Theory
    Winchell Riots
    Dr Slagglebury
    We Aeronauts

some really poors ones tho i do think.. but i wont name them

but its not showing oxford music scene in poor light for sure. its showing the wide variety we have.

  • Beaver Fuel

Kevin – don’t go to the punt if it bothers you that much. In fact, spend months organising your own event so we can criticise it.

  • http://www.gappytooth.com gappy

Come on, now, if Kevin thinks the lineup is crap, he should say so! The right to criticise doesn’t just flow from Nutshaft to performers, it switches the other way, too.

The only problem I have with Kevin, is that he’s certain that there’s nepotism involved, whereas the reality is that Ronut’s arbitration simply differs from Kevin’s (of course, Kevin doesn’t know who applied, he may have found that these were his pick of the bunch as well…a lot of people don’t realise that in promoting you don’t just pick acts out of the air, you book the best lineup you can from the list of acts who are interested, affordable, available, and not too stupid to use a diary!).

The idea that Spiral & Beaver got booked because Joe & Leigh spend a lot of time on the messageboard is laughable; come on, their wittering is more likely to work against them!

So, there you go. Don’t go to The Punt if you think all the acts are dull. Obviously.

Come to GTI this Saturday instead ; )

  • http://www.gappytooth.com gappy

Just out of interest, who did you enjoy last year that made the Punt so special, Kevin?

  • http://www.myspace.com/thespiral25 Joe

“Spiral 25 is perhaps the most boring band I think I have ever listened to in my life. But not only did they get the gig, they are way up there!!!!! Anything to do with the fact they chat alot on the forums?? Hence mates”

Well I am the person with the most posts on the forum, I’m in the boring Spiral 25 and I’m currently in bed with Ronan, we are drinking Argentinian Malbec (14.5%) and listening to Tubeway Army on L. P. then we are going to watch the entire Patrick Troughton series of Doctor Who together. The Doctor’s companions in those series are the best. We’re also drawing Hearts In Pencil on each other.

Hang on… end of side 1.. aaah, that satifying crackle sound then the sound of the arm resting back into place (that’s the record player arm of course). Ronan love, please reach over and turn the record over and pour me another glass of red wine. Red, Red wine. Actually we have UB40’s first album here, best thing they ever did, some of it was recorded in the garden and if you listen carefully you can hear the birds tweeting in the background on the saxophone track.

Or maybe just get our Butler, Leigh from Beaver Fuel to turn the record over and pour the wine. I do love it when he bends over in his nurses outfit. It’s over by the hatstand, Leigh, the one with the Black Hats on it.

Hark! I hear noises down in The Cellar, it must be From Light To Sound working on their latest experiment, there’s been a funny smell like, ozone, wafting up all morning, wonder what they are doing in there, maybe they are converting some new bands to Nightshift cyber standard #118. Guys – I think that one needs more flange. If they need any help they can pick up the phone and Dial F for Frankenstein and Dr. Slaggleberry. They say there are ghosts in the cellar too, but it’s just a phantom theory.

Sometimes they like to shoot guns, they get their pistol kixx out of it.

I am so glad we have Mary to look after the Garden, lots of rabbits out there digging holes, Mary just shoots them and ties their legs together with an Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band to stop them from twitching off the kitchen table and We Aeronauts along with Bethany Weimers and Matt Kilford are out in the sunshine, I can hear the sweet sounds of the accordion drifting over the herb scented fields. Beyond the garden is some arid, dry land where a desert storm is brewing.

Down the road in Winchell there’s a bit of a commotion going on, probably more riots, we don’t come here much, from here we run. Better call the response collective to sort it out.

I am still waiting for my life time acheivement award from Nightshift though. I just need to make a few more posts on the Nightshift forum first.

  • Beaver Fuel

More wine as requested, masters. The quails eggs have been marinating overnight in madeira and will be ready presently, in the meantime allow me to spoon a modicum of finest caviar into your waiting mouths…

If Beaver 25 were booked just because of all the crap we post on the Nutshaft board surely Ronan would cut his losses by booking Thin Green Candles? Just a thought…

  • http://www.spiral25.com/ Joe

Sorry but Fred wouldn’t milk the donkey for Ronan’s bath so he’s not allowed to play the punt this year.

  • Beaver Fuel

That’s ok, all we need is his laptop, he can stay at home.

  • Fizzywig

Looks like “Kevin” can’t think of a decent Punt linup himself or maybe doesn’t want to give himself away for who he really is!

  • TheWrongWay

    He’s Ronan!

I think fair play to the lad ive had the same argument over on NS (Ok so i may not have names and shamed certain bands) but i dont think anyone should get upset by opinion if your in a band your gonna be told your shit fairly often no matter how good you are!

Go Kev whoever you may be….and give us a punt line up it cant hurt (maybe just 1 venues worth i wanna know who you rate)

  • http://www.myspace.com/thespiral25 Joe

    “He’s Ronan!”
Jamie, what are you saying, that kev is Ronan?

“ive had the same argument over on NS (Ok so i may not have names and shamed certain bands) ”

So what are you saying now? That you agree with kev that the line up is pitiful? Which of kev’s arguments do you share exactly? That you think Spiral 25 are boring but only have the guts to agree with someone else who is being outspoken about it?

“if your in a band your gonna be told your shit fairly often no matter how good you are!”
I have no problem with people giving their opinion about the band I’m in per se but I question some people’s motives for doing so, given the circumstances and the fact that kev decided to ruin a completely unrelated thread on here with more ‘opinions’ about my band, again, doesn’t really bother me and it helps makes kev look a right pillock so fair play to him really.

“i wanna know who you rate”

Yes, at least you managed 5 bands yourself, 2 or 3 of them are actually doing the punt and at least one of them hadn’t even applied. So out of all of this guff about the punt “where are the bands most likelilllllly to be signed…” etc all you can come up with is a couple of bands that didn’t even enter.

  • TheWrongWay

    hahah

    and hes off……

  • kev

I WANTED THE KEYZ ON THE PUNT.

    punt that up your ass

  • Beaver Fuel

Now might be a good time to mention that our new ep will be available tonight. For those who checked out our myspace and thought “that’s a bit crap, how did they get on the Punt?”, this is the answer. Yes, it’s that good.

  • http://www.myspace.com/drslaggleberry Dr.Slaggleberry

i thought it the line up was wicked

    whats the fuss about?
