King Of The Birds is a concert being held in celebration of the life and work of Kate Garrett, who passed away aged 37 in 2009. Garrett is a much-missed contributor to the Oxford music scene, having played in The Mystics in the 1990s before becoming a solo artist and fronting The Kate Garrett Band. She also founded the still-active Young Women’s Music Project nine years ago, an initiative running workshops, gigs and recording sessions based at the Ark-T Centre in Cowley.
This concert, being held at the North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford on 5 October, includes a rich selection of artists who were friends of Kate: Chris Wood, Duotone, Jon Fletcher, Helen Garrett, Claud & Will Gibson, Ellie Pavao, Jane Griffiths & Colin Fletcher, Matt Sage, Zoë Bicât, Justin Gibson, Rachel Hughes, Uneek, Trio Hysteria and Nick Gibson & Lisa Fitzgibbon. Doors are at 6.00 pm and tickets priced at £15. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Young Women’s Music Project.

To end with a quote from musician James Grote: “She touched the lives of hundreds of young people and gave to each of them some very special gifts – the gift of music, the gift of creativity and the gift of believing in themselves.”
