Festival season is definitely approaching fast, and news keeps coming in of Oxford bands doing our city proud at events up and down the country. The Wychwood Festival, held on 3-5 June at Cheltenham Racecourse, includes five Oxford acts in its line-up.
The Epstein, Alphabet Backwards, Black Hats, Jessie Grace and Secret Rivals are all part of the fun on the Saturday, slotting into a line-up that also includes The Bluetones, Robyn Hitchcock and Eliza Carthy. Day tickets for this will set you back £53 (or less if you’re not an adult), and if you’re up for the whole weekend – to take in much more music including The Charlatans, Cornershop, Roddy Woomble and, most excitingly, The Wurzels – it’s £115.
It’s obvious that all bands and musicians have to come from somewhere – but it does seem that Oxford keeps popping up as the source of musicians on any increasingly international basis, right now. Is that just a glitch? Or are we back on a peak of the endlessly cyclical sine wave of local music?
