Oxford Contemporary Music continue to diligently and adventurously programme interesting musical events throughout the rest of 2011, and their October to December season is now confirmed. There are eight events lined up in Oxford, covering a wide range of genres and experiences, all of which look to be worth your attention.
- Oxley-Meier Guitar Duo: Tuesday 11 October, Warneford Chapel. Skilful, spontaneous guitar music – “their repertoire of contemporary fare ranges from Turkish panache to soundscapes of latin America, Hungarian gypsy music and beyond.”
- Ice Music: Saturday 5 November, The North Wall Arts Centre. A performance by Terje Isungset, who sculpts musical instruments from solid blocks of Norwegian ice!
- Aurelio: Saturday 12 November, The North Wall Arts Centre. “An infectious mix of laidback guitar grooves and soulful singing”, it says here.
- Death’s Cabaret: Friday 18 November, The North Wall Arts Centre. Songs by Jacques Brel and Kurt Weill in the venue bar, followed by a ‘cabaret concerto’ in the theatre, which will combine the refined concerto format of the nineteenth century with the more random thrills of cabaret.
- Harold Budd/The Necks: Tuesday 22 November, Holywell Music Room. Harold Budd is an extraordinarily-renowned ambient keyboard composer, and here he’s supported by the Australian weirdo improv-noise-blues trio The Necks.
- Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night: Friday 2 December, Radcliffe Square. After the success of this event last year, Phil Kline is back with his atmospheric musical procession through the streets of Oxford, where the audience become the musicians.
- Dennis Rollins’ Velocity Trio: Saturday 3 December, Old Fire Station. Energetic modern jazz from Rollins, who has previously played and composed with Courtney Pine, Blur and Maceo Parker.
- The Floating World Ensemble: Tuesday 13 December, Warneford Chapel. Traditional Japanese instrumentation including koto and shakuhachi flute in an evening of delicate, beautiful Far Eastern music.
