MusicInOxford.co.uk's Gigs Of Note

Gigs of note for 27 August 2012-9 September 2012

A collection of weird and wonderful music is set for Wednesday 29 August, at The Cellar in Oxford. Alongside Fixers’ Jack Goldstein, who’ll be performing a solo set, there’ll be the odd-folk of King Of Cats, and music-from-bands-with-strange-names in the form of Joey Fourr, Beta Blocker & The Body Clock and Yucky Slime. Freakiness will no doubt ensue.

The Rolling Stones aren’t about to rock up to the O2 Academy in Oxford for an intimate show, so if the guilty pleasure of a covers act tweaks your 45s, get along there on Saturday 1 September for The Rolling Clones, to catch the Oxford leg of their hilariously-named ‘Meals On Wheels’ tour. The real Stones have been going for fifty years; the Clones for a pretty impressive fifteen.

There’s a gig aimed squarely at fans of noise, complex math-rock and chuggy alterno-rock on Monday 3 September – promoters 100% Mosh are taking over the Wheatsheaf in Oxford to present Bloody Mammals, Without Maps and Masiro. They describe the acts as ‘for fans of Fugazi, Future Of The Left, Drive Like Jehu, At The Drive-In, Hot Snakes and constantly changing time signatures’. Nice!

It’s not a gig, but a Film Of Note is the LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut Up And Play The Hits, covering the band’s last ever gig, which is being shown at the Phoenix Picturehouse in Oxford on Tuesday 4 September. It’s part of the national premiere for the film, and includes a live Q&A with LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy afterwards, beamed directly from London.

Three showcases of excellent local talent on Friday 7 September: BG Records present hip-hop with Adrenelin, Society, CJ, Chukie and many more at The Net in Abingdon; All Tamara’s Parties present acoustic-y folky goodness with Tamara and a Martyr, Ben Walker, Florian Wolff and more at East Oxford Community Centre; and Daisy Rodgers Music Promotions present hip indie with Nairobi, Empty White Circles and Matt Midgley at the Port Mahon in Oxford.

Full details of these and loads more gigs can be found in the events calendar.
