Frank Turner was seen entertaining 27 million UK viewers when he took part in the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony earlier this year – with members of Oxford’s Dive Dive in his band. Hopefully all of those viewers won’t turn up at once on Monday 26 November, when Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls play O2 Academy in Oxford.
Noisy melody-botherers Hot Hooves launch their new album Fake Modern Art with a gig at The Cellar in Oxford on Thursday 29 November. They’ll be supported by stalwart rock monsters X-1 and youthful indie rockers Yellow Fever.
Help support the Cowley Road Carnival organisers by attending their fundraiser gig, Jouvert!, on Friday 30 November at Oxford’s O2 Academy. Compèred by Asher Dust, the gig has a line-up including electro beatsman Death Of Hi-fi, sketchy indie kids Secret Rivals, get-up-and-dance sounds from Skylarkin’ Soundsystem and the Cuban big band Ran Kan Kan. It’s all helping to raise money to stage the Carnival in 2013.
Interesting sounds look to be on the cards at The North Wall in Oxford on Saturday 1 December – highly-regarded jazz trio Phronesis, featuring musicians from Denmark and Sweden as well as the UK, have been described by Jazzwise magazine and “one of the most exciting bands on the planet today”.
Strong-of-voice songwriter Mark Mulcahy is one of those musicians whose talent seems reflected in the artists who he works with – contributors to his albums have included Thom Yorke, Frank Black, Michael Stipe and Juliana Hatfield. He’ll be appearing in what it’s difficult not to describe as “intimate” surroundings at The Jericho, Oxford, on Friday 7 December, and it’s sure to be a memorable occasion.
Anybody out there reading this have kids? On Saturday 8 December, former Candyskins member Nick Cope will be launching his new CD of childrens’ songs, Why Is The Sky Blue?, with a morning session at The Story Museum in Oxford.
In the evening of Saturday 8 December, there’s a special free gig at Phoenix Picturehouse in Oxford. Phil McMinn, formerly of Fell City Girl and The Winchell Riots, will be launching his debut EP, and he’ll be supported by The Half Rabbits – appearing in an acoustic-only format for this performance – and Jordan O’Shea. There’s more taking place on this day, too, with good-looking gigs also happening at O2 Academy 2, The Rotunda and The Wheatsheaf in Oxford. Decisions, decisions…
Full details of these and loads more gigs can be found in the events calendar.
