A spot of brutal metal, if you fancy that, can be taken in at The Wheatsheaf in Oxford on Tuesday 29 January. It’s pretty obvious from the names of the bands playing that some noise and aggression may be in the offing: Cerebral Bore, Warpath, Cemtex, Acrania and Black Skies Burn all take part in a date on the headliners’ tour, delicately named the ‘Survivors Of The Great Apocalypse’.
On a gentler note, art meets music on Friday 1 February as the Art Jericho venue hosts an evening of solo singer-songwriter performances. Phil McMinn (ex-Winchell Riots and Fell City Girl) headlines, ably supported by the fast rising talent of Jordan O’Shea and another gig from My Crooked Teeth.
Old meets new on Friday 1 February‘s Skylarkin’ Soundsystem night at The Cellar in Oxford. The old is Earl Gateshead, a reggae DJ who has been doing his thing since punk hit in the 1970s; the new is General Roots, a London six-piece who mix up dancehall and reggae with highly energetic results!
Nice songs in a nice setting – fancy a bit of that? Patrick Wolf is playing at St John The Evangelist Church in Oxford on Monday 4 February. The London singer-songwriter is celebrating ten years of creating music with a new album of sparse reworkings of earlier songs, and at this gig he’ll be accompanied by only a piano and string quartet.
The inventive, think-outside-the-box-ers The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band are launching their own cider brand – to be produced by the Cotswold Cider Company – on Saturday 9 February. To celebrate the occasion, they’ll be joined by Swindlestock on the launch date for a special gig at Oxford’s Big Bang restaurant.
Celebrate Truck Store’s second birthday by paying their Cowley Road shop a visit on Sunday 10 February. They’re marking the occasion with an afternoon of free in-store performances, and playing host to Trophy Wife, Rhosyn, Salvation Bill, New Carnival and Jordan O’Shea. Good music, great store!
