Double A-side ‘I Won’t Crawl’ / ‘Stop The Machine’ is the first release from Traps, a band who are starting to build a groundswell of support with their grungy pop-punk sound. ‘I Won’t Crawl’ starts off deceptively; it sounds a little like it’s on the edge of bursting into a power-chord filled lament. However, the chorus helps to dispel any notion of that, conjuring images of Skunk Anansie, but with more ferocity. Then it goes and gets better, stumbling angrily into a wiry breakdown with a howling guitar before fading out.
‘Stop The Machine’ is something really special. It opens with a discordant, filthy riff before clambering to its feet and showing a brief glimpse of a soft underbelly. Lead singer Lex sings: “You need to step away from that lever,” as the lever goes and gets pulled anyway, and everything goes up a riotous notch. At times, it descends into anarchistic punk, a little like the ridiculously crazy Canadian boys of METZ. Besides, any song about levers leads to thoughts of the equally bonkers dance-punk miscreants from all those years ago, Test Icicles. The drums cackle and crash throughout. The fierceness of the noise surrounding Lex’s vocals helps to make them all the more acute and penetrating. It is breathless, brilliant stuff, and is making a lot of people very excited about the future of this band.
