A new track from the irrepressible Asher Dust, who seems to be, one way or another, making music (or being involved in music) all day, every day. His previous work, in the form of remixes, solo tracks, as a member of Big Speakers and so on, has swerved elegantly between heavy dub, rich soul, glitch-laden grime and chunky hip-hop. ‘Tickle Me Pink’, a single track recently released as a free stream or pay-what-you-like download, plunges elements of these disparate elements of previous work into an intimidating melting pot.
The track is excellently messy, with Asher Dust’s familiar vocal tones finding their way through elements of grime, chiptune, noise, diving sub-bass and – ultimately – a kind of distorted P-Funk, the whole kaboodle tied together with sparse dub basslines. It’s a big old psychedelic mash-up, and a superb piece of studio production, that’s at odds with itself over whether it’s a danceable anthem or a think-piece; that tension pays dividends over repeat listens. Asher Dust has at times in the past suffered from dipping into schmaltz or repetitiveness – that’s almost inevitable over such a long, productive career. This track nails a combination of weirdness, invention and attitude that shows him at his best.
