Gigs of note for 16 September 2013-29 September 2013

The ‘Frankie’s Whisky Night’ series of gigs has been running for a while, and the next one is on Thursday 19 September at Port Mahon in Oxford. The gigs are a celebration of whisky – your entry fee also gets you a shot of single malt – and fine, largely folk/Americana-esque music. This time, the line-up includes not only Francis Pugh & The Whisky Singers (aka Frankie) but also Ben Marwood (who recently supported Frank Turner on an American tour) and James McKean (who plays a country/soul/gospel combo).

Boozy good-time skiffle punks The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band launch their new album, Party Seven, with a special gig on Saturday 21 September. They’re taking over the D-Wing of the old Oxford prison – otherwise known as Oxford Castle Unlocked – and will be supported by Megan Henwood and Sweet’n’Sour Swing. Quirky things to do as well as enjoying the music will include buying drinks from a bar set up in a padded cell, and having a late night poke around the old prison environment!

The Old Fire Station in Oxford launches its new gig series, The Listening Room, on Sunday 22 September. A monthly slot in their performance space, this first instalment will see Kill Murray, The Sea The Sea and Freada performing sets within this excellent venue.

Current ‘buzz band’ The 1975 are described as an ‘art-pop quartet’, which may get the goat of some muso types. Regardless, they seem to be on the up and up right now and so it might be a good time to catch the Mancunian genre-mixers at O2 Academy in Oxford. They’re playing there on Tuesday 24 September.

Good old Skeletor; the reliably excellent metal promoters have their latest showcase gig at O2 Academy 2 in Oxford on Saturday 28 September. Metal bands have some of the best names, so why not check out these bad boys: Aethara, Mask Of Judas, Fleisch, Lest We Forget, De’mask Thyself. Your entry ticket will also entitle you to free entry to Propaganda club after the gig, if you’re so inclined.

An alternative to the metal on Saturday 28 September is the latest gig from the equally reliable Gappy Tooth Industries. They’ll be at The Wheatsheaf in Oxford with a line-up that comprises Auctioneers (‘delicate indie folk’), The Push (‘dubstep and live drums’) and The Scholars (‘epic, windswept electro-dusted pop’). Eclectic as always!

Full details of these and loads more gigs can be found in the events calendar.

Cheers, MIO. Also worth noting that The Scholars will be launching a new record, “Neon Sky” at this event, so come along and graba copy.
