Here’s the debut EP from Toliesel, released today. Contours features four tracks – ‘Whispered Half Asleep’, ‘The Light’, ‘Lighthouse’ and ‘Brothers’ – and neatly represents what this confident young band has done so far in their career. As with a lot of music that is tweaking the earlobes of music fans right now, it’s pretty mellow, and also just pretty. There are hints not only of the quality Americana/alt-folk that Oxford seems to effortlessly put out there (The Epstein, Huck), but also of the much-missed epic happy/sad pop songs of Fell City Girl. At times the sound also dips a toe into the blurred beauty of prime-era 4AD releases; as a whole, Contours is very assured, and will hopefully be built upon and given some more unique twists with future releases.
