Gigs of note for 18 November 2013-1 December 2013

Bring along your earplugs on Wednesday 20 November as Honky play the Wheatsheaf in Oxford. The ‘Austin superboogie trio’, featuring JD Pinkus of the legendary Butthole Surfers, will be bringing the psycho blues noise, supported by Oxford’s own Desert Storm and Barry & The Beachcombers, as well as Prosperina, a prog-rock-gets-noisy band from South Wales.

Seems it’s been a while since local promoter Daisy Rodgers Music Promotion has put on a show, so it’s good to see one lined up for Friday 22 November. This promoter’s gigs always tend to be busy and of quality, and this one shouldn’t be any different – get over to the Jericho Tavern in Oxford to catch The Sea The Sea, The Black Tambourines and Happyness.

Another good Oxford promoter is Irregular Folk, who are also running a gig on Friday 22 November – decisions, decisions! They’ve got Rachael Dadd, Emma Gatrill and Little Arrow on their bill, within the cosy confines of The Cellar in Oxford. Their gigs often include home-made sausage rolls and artisan beers, too…

It’s the splendid annual AUDIOSCOPE all-day festival on Saturday 23 November. The event, which has been running since 2001, aims to bring an eclectic collection of excellent, slightly out-there music to Oxford, and also to raise a lot of money for national homelessness charity Shelter. This year’s event – at the Jericho Tavern in Oxford from midday to midnight – has a blinder of a line up: Califone, Esben And The Witch, Pet Moon, Eat Lights Become Lights, Grumbling Fur, Fonda 500, Pye Corner Audio, Thought Forms, Salvation Bill, Adam Gnade, Tomaga and Listing Ships. If you only get to one gig this year, etc…

Get your fill of hip ‘buzz’ bands – or, at least, a couple that seemed to be buzzing in the recent past – on Thursday 28 November at the O2 Academy, Oxford. They’ve got two separate gigs on that night: one from Palma Violets, one from Wild Beasts. Who’s buzzing now? Go find out for yourselves.

Oxford City Festival seems to be a banner slapped on pretty much any gig happening in Oxford in the week of 25 November, with a particularly eclectic line-up appearing at O2 Academy 2, Oxford on Friday 29 November. The Goggenheim will be supported by The Knights Of Mentis, The Mighty Redox and The Great Big Bargain. Why, it’s a cast of bands whose names start with ‘The’!

Full details of these and loads more gigs can be found in the events calendar.

A night out with Smilex is always worth the effort (just don’t pick up the cleaning bill); however, if that option doesn’t tickle you, come to GTI on Saturday instead, where you can see COlumba, Ya OK Yeah (from France), and JEff Wode, garnering all the critical plaudits at the moment, it woudl seem.
