Peter Doherty (Wednesday 2 July @ O2 Academy 2, Oxford): Announced at pretty short notice, the dippy loveable drug-hoovering rogue Peter Doherty, of The Libertines, plays what will inevitably be called an ‘intimate’ show before the full band kicks off their summer touring. Will he turn up? Will he be any good? Will he accept being known as Pete, rather than Peter? Only one way to find out…
Cornbury Music Festival (Friday 4 July-Sunday 6 July @ Great Tew Park): The line-up may not be the most cutting edge or revolutionary for a lot of people – with sets promised from the likes of The Gipsy Kings, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Jools Holland and Simple Minds – but hey, it’s likely to be sunny and it’s likely to be relaxed and good-natured. Plus, there are a fine selection of Oxford bands lined up to play, too, including The Epstein, Brickwork Lizards and The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band.
Oxfordshire Music Charity Football World Cup (Saturday 5 July @ Oxford City FC 3G pitches, Oxford): It’s not a gig, but it is a thing of note… organised by promoters Pindrop and Audioscope, local musicians are set to lock horns (or whatever footballers do – lock football boots?) in a series of six-a-side matches on what will hopefully be a fine, fun Saturday afternoon. It’s all for a good cause – money raised will go to Shelter and The Gatehouse – so why not pop along to cheer on the teams?
Cowley Road Carnival (Sunday 6 July @ Cowley Road, Oxford): Something of a legendary and well-loved event, Cowley Road Carnival will see music, dance, entertainments, food, crowds, hanging out, drinking, meeting up with old chums, and generally having a jolly old time up and down the Cowley Road for the afternoon. There’ll be music from The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band (they get around), The Dublings and DJ FU amongst many others.
YardFest 2014 (Friday 11 July @ The Courtyard, Bicester): The Courtyard in Bicester puts on a lot of very positive events, and this year’s YardFest is co-organised by a committee of teenagers to give them experience of volunteering. Raising money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the five-hours-plus event will include music from Blitz Kids, Attention Thieves and Hype Theory.
Irregular Folk’s Summer Session (Saturday 12 July @ The Perch, Oxford): Keep everything crossed for a sunny day as Irregular Folk’s all-day event brings a formidable line-up to this beautiful location. As well as some tip-top local talent like Salvation Bill, Jess Hall and Duotone, there’s a lot more to pique your interest such as The Irrepressibles, You Are Wolf, The May Birds… and more. And more.
Full details of these and loads more gigs can be found in the events calendar.
