Here’s the latest release from The Scholars, a free one-track download single called ‘Spooks’. Compared to previous releases, it holds back a little on the widescreen sense of bombast that was often prevalent, instead melding familiar Ian McCulloch-tinged vocals with a chaotic, upbeat mess of sound that lines them up pretty squarely with another Oxford outfit, The Half Rabbits. It’s a good track that benefits from an uptempo sense of tension and a stacking of instrumentation that’s wound into a rich wall of sound.

‘Spooks’ will also be available at Scholars gigs on a very limited edition CD, which will also include the ‘Mr Generic’ remix of the track along with a cover of ‘Nightcall’ by Kavinsky, as featured in its original form on the soundtrack to the movie Drive.
