Moscheles: 3 Melodic-Contrapuntal Studies
Brahms: Cello Sonata no.1 in E minor Op.38
Schumann: Funf Stücke im Volkston
Brahms: Cello Sonata no.2 in F major Op.99
By turns monumental, intimate, and enigmatic, Brahms’s two sonatas are cornerstones of the Romantic cello repertoire. The thoroughly-wrought Sonata no.1 treats the cello and piano almost as equal partners, featuring dramatic exchanges between the two instruments, while Sonata no.2 – written over 20 years after the first – is particularly adventurous in its wide-ranging modulations and harmonic scheme. Two sets of character pieces – one by Ignaz Moscheles, a friend and teacher of Mendelssohn, and the other written by Schumann ‘in the folk style’ – introduce the halves of tonight’s programme.
The ticket price includes entry to a pre-concert talk at 6.30 pm, given by broadcaster and writer Richard Wigmore.
