The notions of chance and indeterminacy were essential to much of John Cage’s output, and they are particularly vital for his music-theatre piece Roaratorio. Instead of a traditional musical score, Cage provided a set of instructions on how any book may be adapted for ensemble – leaving decisions on the subject, duration, and scoring of the piece to the performers involved. James Joyce’s playful and mysterious Finnegans Wake is the chosen text for these two performances, which promise to be provocative, bewildering, and compelling events.
