Gunning For Tamar in NME

Gunning For Tamar are NME breakthrough track of the week

Well done Gunning For Tamar, for their track ‘The Organs. The Senses. The Muscles. The Memories’ being this week’s NME breakthrough track of the week. Love it or hate it, NME still gets read by lots of people, so it’ll hopefully get the band a little burst of exposure. The seemingly random selection of Jonathan from Everything Everything says about the track “Fair play to them for not just playing the usual crap” – erudite indeed – in his oddly neo-gibberish capsule review.

We at MusicInOxford.co.uk were naturally ahead of the curve, and offered the track as a free MP3 download back in July. Want more Gunning For Tamar? There’s now an NME page about them, or you can head for the source and drop by their MySpace page.

I presume that the BlackBerry sponsorship of NME breakthrough means free smartphones all round too, eh lads? Perhaps not…

Oddly, Oxford is on the facile “What’s Hot/What’s Not” type article in this week’s NME, too. They list the top 3 local acts as Fixers (fair dos), Chad Valley (not seen them), and Trophy Wife (no idea, anyone?).

Trophy Wife are on Zane Lowe’s show tonight, according to ‘the Twittersphere’. They’re supporting Foals on tour in November: http://www.myspace.com/atrophywife

We’re playing with Trophy Wife in Aldershot next month. I don’t know much about them though.

GFT, this is awesome news. NME.com featured Monsters on their daily free MP3 blog a couple of weeks ago, and our hits shot right up, so I can only imagine how much exposure the physical edition will get you. Cracking work

Trophy Wife seem to be Oxfordshire recluses. Alex had a go at interviewing them a while back, but got brushed off with the promise of an e-mail interview. I wonder how we upset them?

You probably said they were shit, and then asked the drummer to join your band, Col, that’s how it usually works.

Am I the only one who things “Atrophy Wife” (as per their myspace address) is a better band name?

    According to this blog: http://wecantmixandwedontcare.blogspot.com/search/label/Trophy%20Wife
Trophy Wife are one of 4 local bands worth checking out (along with Fixers and Chad Valley, bizarrely). The blog also says that “in the wake of Foals’ success Oxford has a bit of a scene emerging”. Who’d have thought it?
Trophy Wife is one of the old Youthmovies people isn’t it? Which would explain the Foals support.

Hmmm. Pet Moon & Trophy Wife were mentioned by Yannis as 2 of his favourite local acts in an interview acout 6 months ago, I seem to recall.

Perhaps they play Camden every week instead of Oxford, explaining why we’ve never heard of them, & the NME has!

  • leesmilex

pet moon is andy youthmovies new project is it not? so they dont have to have played at all for yannis to have reccomended them. don’t know the trophy wife tho! i thought fixers were in the buzz section of nme this week? is this not news worth putting on here too? not taking anything away from gunning for tamar of course!
cahd valley is hugo from the modern/jonquil etc using al ymss’ old alias cos it is a toy instrument make! :-)x

Stuff gets put on as news if either people tell me about it, or I happen to notice it! GFT contacted me which is where their story came from – Fixers didn’t, and I don’t read NME so didn’t know about that…

Trophy Wife were the Guardian’s new band of the day on Tuesday.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen them in the Oxford gig listings though…

  • colinmackinnon

Jody Prewett is the front man in this band- didn’t he play in This Town Needs Guns a while back?

  • Benjy

Kit and Jody are both in Jonquil aren’t they?

  • leesmilex

yep jody was in both those and christian rock band x-hail back at the start of the century if i remember rightly…
was not dissing, simon just wondering! i don’t read it either unless bored in the library for too long! :-)x
