Terrifying ghost

Scary/non-scary gigs for Hallowe’en weekend

Protect yourself from the horrifying sight of trick-or-treating feral youth by getting out of the house and to a few gigs this weekend. The gig calendar has a few choice treats that may well haunt you with good memories. Here’s a round-up:

Friday 29 October

Get your indie-pop on with Samuel Zasada, Toliesel and Anna Log at the Wheatsheaf, Oxford, presented by Three Blind Mice. Or would you prefer the horrorshow combo of Borderville, Mephisto Grande and Prohibition Smokers’ Club? Coo can give you what you need if you go to the Jericho, Oxford for their ‘Voodoo Hoodoo’ night. Or perhaps you want something a bit more improv, a bit more relaxed? In that case get your sweet ass to the Albion Beatnik Bookshop, Oxford, where you’ll find The Maltsters, made up of local improv-jazzsters David Stent, Dom Lash and Paul May.

Saturday 30 October

Fixers and Wap Wap Wow in Modern Art Oxford. That should be cool, no? One for the hipsters? If that ain’t you, then what about Gappy Tooth at the Wheatsheaf, Oxford? They’ve got one of their famously eclectic line-ups going on: Chambers Of The Heart, Countryside and Matt Winkworth. That’s no good to you? You want to stay up dancing until 3.00 am instead? You could do worse than The Cellar, Oxford, then – where Pure Concentrated Evil have on the outstandingly fantabulous Coloureds, along with Huck And The Handsome Fee, Komrad, Agness Pike and Undersmile.

Sunday 31 October

Spook up your Hallowe’en Sunday with a trip to the Port Mahon to see Dr. Carmilla and the Mechanisms, Rachael Sage and Huck (here without the Handsome Fee). Intimate. Want more jazz? Want a bit of experimentation? Get thee down the O2 Academy, Oxford, and you’ll find Oxford Contemporary Music are presenting Polar Bear, who offer a bit of experimentalised jazz music, and whom include soundmaker extraordinaire Leafcutter John in their line-up.

Should you wish to know, Chambers Of The Heart are an improv rock supergroup, featuring loads of people you already love from other banmds, plus extra ‘cello, theremin and musical saw, I’m reliably informed. Countryside come from Devon…or one of those buimpkin places out West, I forget which. Anyway, they kind of sound like Mew playing Grandaddy, which has got to be worth it. Matt is a C21 music hall genius, tinkling his plastic ivories and releasing his new LP at this very gig!

Top tackle…the MAO & Clr lineups look quite tasty too, I must admit. A bit of a vintage night out.

Coloureds at The Cellar was the most amazing performance i’ve witnessed in Oxford in ages! I couldn’t stop dancing!

only let down was the mismatch of support acts (all good, but not dance music). Should’ve been two seperate shows if you ask me!
