Spinner Fall / Lionface / Ruskin Bob @ The Wheatsheaf, Oxford

Saturday 24 November 2012, 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm

£4.50 on the door, cheaper in advance

Gappy Tooth Industries logoSpinner Fall: “Spinner Fall feature former members of Oxford hardcore pioneers Skydrive and Callous as well as post-rockers From Light To Sound but bear only a passing resemblance to any of those, opting instead for an intensely turbulent noise that somehow marries shoegaze glissando with a postpunk brittleness and a throat-shreddingly hectoring vocal delivery that can variously remind you of Ride, Husker Dun and The Fall, all at the same time.” – Nightshift soundcloud.com/spinnerfall

Lionface: Those of you with good memories might recall a set from Plymouth lass Kat Marsh at GTI almost two years ago, ladling out the sassy one-woman loop station pop like there was no tomorrow. Now she has a new outfit, Lionface, that make chunky, unusual pop music that sounds not unlike Kate Bush and Sonic Youth playing tiddly winks at Erasure’s chalet. Except, of course, exactly unlike that, because that was a stupid thing to say. Anyway, they’re blooming brilliant. www.facebook.com/lionfacemusic

Ruskin Bob: And from a spanking new act who don’t have much info online yet we move to… an old act who has nothing online whatsoever, because he’s a mad genius who holds no truck with the rest of the world. Possibly. Those of you with VERY good memories might recall Dreamlab play his electro synth beauties at one of the very first GTIs over a decade ago, like a one man John Foxx. Err, well, John Foxx is one man, but you get the idea. Or maybe you don’t, because now young(ish) Rob McLean has trashed the Korg and is toting a good old battered acoustic and harmonica to offer you some more of his simple, friendly, hummable songs. Who needs a Twitter account when you have the tunes? Well, us, because we usually just steal things form online for these mailouts, and now we’re stuck. Ho hum. He’s well good, though, innit?
