Composer/pianist Martin Pickett’s trio – Ben Twyford (drums), Paul Jefferies (bass) – take a Jarrett-esque approach to translating tunes by the likes of Van Morrison, Elvis Costello and Metheny, and with well-nigh telepathic empathy produce scintillating jazz akin to ‘birth of the cool’. Compositions by all three feature in their performances as well as standard jazz classics. There’s a real grand piano, sound/lighting by David Carugo and a proper bar provided and run by the Old Parsonage. Nibbles, two 45-minute sets of the most accessible jazz you’ll hear, and a great atmosphere to boot.
