Event Navigation
Acker Bilk, British clarinetist and jazz band leader, has been actively playing and contributing to British jazz since the 1950s. Among Chris Barber, Kenny Ball, Ken Colyer, Monty Sunshine and Terry Lightfoot, Acker Bilk brought back the traditional jazz fashion and the sound of New Orleans in the UK. He also had a world wide hit in 1961 – ‘Stranger on the Shore’ – which is a tune that many of us still remember. In March 2001, Acker was honoured with an MBE for his services to the music industry. In 2005, Acker was awarded both the BBC Jazz Award for his unique contribution to Jazz in the UK.
On this evening, you will experience a live traditional jazz concert by Acker Bilk & His Paramount Jazz Band. At the age of 83, Acker is still playing music up and down the country!
The event will be hosted by Greg Butler, who will be introducing British Jazz History and DJing his British Jazz 78 record collections. Oxford’s finest Melody Room Jazz Band will be special guests for the evening.
