A tenor saxophonist who played in the company of George Coleman and Nat Adderley, two of the greatest improvisers in jazz, needs to be taken pretty seriously. Art is such a player and his fluent, bewitching solos seem as compelling now as at any time over his long and distinguished career. Art began playing as a student at Cambridge when he got heavily involved in the British scene – he played with many of the great musicians of that style and period such as Graham Bond, Ginger Baker and Alexis Korner. It was however his joining Stan Tracey’s group that made his name on the world jazz stage.
