Mozart: Quartet in D minor K.421
Janacek: Quartet no.2, ‘Intimate Letters’
Beethoven: Quartet no.1 in F major Op.59, ‘Razumovsky’
The Cavaleri Quartet was awarded the 2012-2013 Radcliffe Chamber Music Residency at Oxford University’s Faculty of Music, and marks its JdP debut with an intriguing selection of pieces which were notably influenced by their dedicatees.
The programme opens with Mozart’s quartet in D minor – one of six quartets dedicated to his friend Haydn – and Janáček’s ‘Intimate Letters’, inspired by the composer’s long friendship with Kamila Stösslová and said to be his ‘manifesto on love’. Beethoven’s ‘Razumovsky’ Quartets – named after the Russian ambassador to Vienna, who commissioned them – are particularly noted for the complex and brilliant writing for all players in the ensemble.
