A rare chance to see this South African jazz legend, in an intimate duo with long-time collaborator, pianist and friend Larry Willis. Masekela and Willis met at music college in New York in the 60s, immersing themselves in the jazz scene nightly watching the greats of a golden era of jazz. Their release Friends is a masterpiece of chamber jazz combined with the sheer exuberance of the Masekela style.
Under the guidance of legends Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong, Masekela was encouraged to develop his now signature Afro-jazz sound, emphasising African rather than American influences. Masekela brought global awareness to his native South Africa and through his music led the fight to end apartheid. He has worked with phenomenal and diverse artists such as Paul Simon, Fela Kuti, Stevie Wonder and his former wife and collaborator Miriam Makeba. His influence on generations of musicians from all genres is celebrated worldwide.
