Oxford University Sinfonietta perform Rameau, Ravel, Varèse and Poulenc @ St Peter’s College Chapel, Oxford

Tuesday 5 March 2013, 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm

£10 / £5

Sinfonietta flyerOxford University’s premier student chamber orchestra perform an all-French programme of works spanning two centuries from 1748 to 1948, in the atmospheric setting of St Peter’s College Chapel.

From the Baroque grandeur and drama of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s overture to his classically-inspired opera ‘Zaïs’ (in a new edition by conductor Ed Whitehead), to the sparkling 20th-century wit of Francis Poulenc’s rarely-performed ‘Sinfonietta’, via the piquant neoclassicism of Ravel’s ‘Tombeau de Couperin’, it’s sure to be an unmissable evening.

Also on the programme is a performance of Edgard Varèse’s intricately-crafted, ‘Rite of Spring’-inspired eight-minute triptych ‘Octandre’, scored for seven winds and double bass and performed by a group of Oxford’s finest principal players.
