Trailblazing British concert guitarist Richard Durrant is limbering up for his 2013 autumn tour with three unplugged solo appearances. He completes his trio of acoustic outings by performing at Europe’s oldest, purpose-built concert venue – the 265-year-old Holywell Music Room, in Holywell Street, Oxford.
Durrant’s programme will include his much-loved Paraguayan portfolio (especially works by Agustin Barrios) plus new music uncovered by Durrant during his South American adventures. Expect to hear, too, pieces by Bach, compositions by Durrant himself and sounds of Spain, including a beautiful arrangement of Cordoba by Isaac Albeniz (“the whole of Spanish history in four minutes,” says Durrant).
For nearly a quarter of a century, Durrant has been in the vanguard of presenting eclectic repertoire in ever more intriguing and innovative ways (including his renowned, good-natured banter with every audience he entertains) while the rest of the classical music world continues to agonise over how to make itself more accessible.
Durrant’s popularity stretches far beyond these shores as, following his autumn tour, he is making his third visit to Paraguay in November. While there, he will not only play the iconic Rodrigo ‘Concierto di Aranjuez’ with the Asuncion City Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of maestro Luis Szarán, but will also world-première, with cellist Pablo Romero, a composition he has been commissioned to write for guitar, cello and cello section. On 21 October, Durrant is releasing his most ambitious solo album to date, Christmas Guitars, including a guest appearance by comedy legend Barry Cryer.
