In 1977, John Otway’s ‘Cor Baby That’s Really Free’ reached number 27 in the UK charts. His next hit came 25 years later. In this entirely fan-funded documentary, the UK cult legend returns to his old school to give a hilarious course on survival in the music industry. The frequent lows and spasmodic, spectacular highs of Otway’s career make for an entertaining story of one man’s ongoing reach for stardom. John Otway’s live performances are legendary.
Never one to stint, Otway chose Leicester Square Odeon for the ‘producer’s cut’, adding the film’s ending on the day of the premiere. The movie was deemed a resounding triumph.
Featuring classic archive film and TV footage, plus interviews with family and antagonists (who are all unanimous in their estimation of his talent), the film shows just how much can be made of so little. Analysing the disastrous decisions that led to 25 years out of the limelight before Otway returned to the top, it demonstrates all too well the pitfalls of the rock ‘n’ roll dream.
John Otway will be attending in person for a Q&A after the screening.
